“Save the River Wye”- Mid and West Wales MS Jane Dodds calls on Welsh Gov to clean up Welsh river

This week in the Senedd, Mid and West Wales MS Jane Dodds has called on the Welsh Government to tackle concerning levels of pollution in the river Wye.

The call comes after a recent decision to deny bathing status to a stretch near Hay-on-Wye, despite work from local community group “Friends of the River Wye” to improve water quality throughout the Welsh section of the river.

Despite being marked as a Special Area of Conservation, the river has suffered in recent years from high levels of pollution.

Mid and West Wales MS Jane Dodds has now called for the Welsh Government to bring together stakeholders to move the issue of cleaning up the river forward.

Commenting, the Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats Jane Dodds MS said:

“The River Wye is rightfully heralded by people both here in Wales and across the UK as a site of pristine natural beauty.

I alongside many other locals value the river as a place to swim, canoe and reconnect with nature, but these opportunities are being denied by unacceptable high levels of pollution.

As someone with a vested interest in preserving Wales natural heritage for future generations, I would like to see a plan from the Welsh government detailing how they will try to halt and reverse the deteriorating condition of this much beloved river.

The Welsh Government must take action to restore the river back to its natural beauty by bringing together relevant stakeholders to move the issue of cleaning up the river forward.

We cannot sit by and watch as our nation’s natural beauty is eroded away by the scourge of pollution.”
