Party Committee Elections

Applications open on Sunday 21st September until midday on Sunday 12th October!

Welcome to our internal elections hub! This is your one-stop shop for everything you need to know about taking part in our party’s internal democratic process—whether you are considering standing for election, supporting a candidate, or casting your vote.

Which roles will be open for application?

All our committee positions are up for election during the autumn of 2025. The term for these positions will run from 1st January 2026 until the end of 2028.

Party Officers

Party Officers lead specific functions within the party and serve on various committees.

Current vacancies:

Welsh Party Committee Members

Ordinary Committee Members are elected by members to represent them on party committees. The Local Government Representative on the Policy Development Committee is elected by our elected councillors.

Current Vacancies:

Representatives to Federal Party Committees

To ensure Wales is represented in the Federal Party's decision-making, we have representatives on various Federal Party Committees.

Current Vacancies:

Members of Party Appeals Panels

The Appeals Panels of both the Welsh and Federal Parties handle internal disputes not covered by the party's independent complaints process.

Current Vacancies:

  • Member of the Welsh Appeals Panel (8 vacancies)

Who can apply?

Any member of the Welsh Liberal Democrats will be able to apply for these positions, with the following exceptions:

  • Local Government Representative on the Policy Development Committee: Only elected councillors serving as Liberal Democrats are eligible.
  • Members of Appeals Panels: Members of the Senedd or Parliament, prospective candidates for these bodies, members of the Welsh Board or Campaigns and Communications Committee, and party employees are not eligible to stand for either the Welsh or Federal Appeals Panels. All other members may apply.

How should I apply?

You will first need to submit an application form then gather support from other party members.

Step 1: Submit your application form

Download the application form and submit it via email, post or in person at the Welsh Autumn Conference in Wrexham.

Download an Application Form (Microsoft Word)

The form consists of two sections:

  • Section 1: Personal and contact details (shared only with the Returning Officer and relevant party staff).
  • Section 2: Questions about your relevant skills and experiences as well as what you wish to achieve if elected (shared with members during the election process).

Application forms can be submitted from Sunday, 21st September until midday on Sunday, 12th October 2025.

Step 2: Gather support from other party members

Applications for the following roles require the support of thirty party members, which must be spread across at least five local parties:

  • President
  • Deputy President
  • Executive Officers (except the Executive Officer for Finance & Resources)

Applications for the following roles need the support of five party members:

  • Welsh Party Committee Members (the five members supporting applications for the Representative from Local Government on the Policy Development Committee must all be Liberal Democrat councillors elected in Wales).
  • Representatives to Federal Party Committees.

Applications for other roles do not need support.

Members will be able to show their support for your application in two ways from Sunday 21st September:

  • Online at libdems.wales/internal-elections/support, or
  • By post or in person at the Welsh Autumn Conference using a paper form, which will be available from Sunday.

You will be able to ask members you know to support you by email, phone, or social media. But please don’t send bulk messages or use contact details from any party databases.

Also, don’t ask party staff to support your application. Staff must stay neutral and work with whoever is elected.

The deadline for members to register their support is midday on Sunday, 12th October 2025.

When will voting take place?

If a contested election takes place, voting will open on Friday 24th October and close on Monday 17th November.

Make sure you receive your vote

To vote you must be a fully paid-up member on 12th October. If your membership is due to expire soon and you do not pay by Direct Debit or Recurring Card Payment, please ensure you renew in time.

New members can join at libdems.org.uk/join, while existing members can easily renew at libdems.org.uk/renew. When you renew, a full year will be added to your membership, so there is no need to wait until the expiry date but if you want to check please email help@libdems.org.uk.

It is important that we have up to date contact details for all members. If you've recently moved or are not recieving emails from the party you can update your details by emailing help@libdems.org.uk.

If you have any questions or would like to raise any issues regarding the conduct of these elections please contact the Party Coordinator, Elgan Morgan, by emailing elgan.morgan@libdems.wales
