Bromley Council Budget: Conservatives Wasting Taxpayers' money on ULEZ legal fees to make a political point

At the meeting of Bromley Council on 27th February, the Council voted in favour of a 4.99% increase in Council Tax for 2023-2024. During the meeting Bromley Liberal Democrats proposed amendments to the Budget to make it fairer, greener and less wasteful of taxpayer money. The Lib Dems opposed the Conservatives' proposal to spend £140,000 on legal fees to fight the ULEZ Expansion - Lib Dem Sutton are opposing the scheme too but they aren't throwing taxpayers' money away to make a political point.

Bromley Conservatives punish Liberal Democrats by removing leader’s allowance

The Conservative-run Bromley Council want to remove the allowance paid to the Liberal Democrat group leader, while increasing allowances paid to others, including the Conservative Council leader, Conservative Deputy Leader and Labour leader. The local Lib Dem team say the Conservatives are taking this extraordinary step - removing an allowance that has been paid for at least the last 20 years - to punish the group for being vocal in their opposition to several key decisions taken by the Conservatives recently.

Beckenham School Street Closes

The School Street at St Mary’s RC Primary School Beckenham will not be reopening due to the lack of volunteers to man the barriers. This leaves just one School Street in operation in Bromley, a direct result of Bromley Council's decision to withdraw support for the schemes.

The Lib Dems have published their response to the consultation, emphasising that the document should guide the Council to stand up for the best interests of local people, support positive regeneration plans which would enhance our town and resist massive overbearing developments which would not.
