Traffic calming of the kind described in Julia Samson's article is not new: the pictures below come from 'Streets Ahead', published in 1979. The inability of British local authorities to learn and adopt best practice is scandalous, leaving thousands of people killed or injured in accidents caused by high speeds that should have been designed out of residential roads years ago.

Paul Burall thinks that politicians may have got it all wrong
There are several reasons why the Green Liberal Democrats should have an awards scheme. Firstly, the occasion should serve to raise the profile of the organisation itself. Secondly, the award-winners will be granted a title that they can hopefully use in their own subsequent campaigning (being able to put "Green Campaigner of the Year" or something similar on all your election literature isn't exactly going to do you any harm!).
