Day One - 1st November 2021 Just a short entry from me (Keith) this morning, before I spend the rest of today making sure the caravan is ready to go early tomorrow and is fully packed.
On Wednesday, Rishi Sunak's long awaited - and frequently leaked - 2021 budget was revealed in the House of Commons. Let's go over three of the key headlines.
Prologue - 31st October 2021
COP26 - Less Than a Week Away Excitement - Or Concern (And Trepidation!) As we get closer to COP26, I feel both a sense of excitement that this major global conference is about to happen, in our backyard, as it were … and a real sense of concern and disappointment that we are going to be let down again by an incompetent and bungling Government. Not to mention trepidation at the threat of strike action by rail and bus employees!
In Green Liberal Democrats we are adamant. Making energy saving the nation's first priority is the best way forward. Compare the limited £3.9 billion announced over 3 years, to provide only 90,000 homes with a new type of hearing, with the £150 billion programme LibDem Leader, Ed Davey, proposes. That will insulate the social housing stock and help homeowners. How? Industry will develop new materials and switch to new products with technology we know about and some new that we don't know about now, to all but completely free us from the need for heating new domestic and commercial buildings. Changing regulations is key. If everyone has to meet the new regulations the scale of the market for sustainable tech will bring down prices in a competitive market. How will we pay for insulating homes? Vulnerability to escalating gas cost now shows that it won't take many years to recoup the cost to retrofit an existing property. On Wednesday, Conservative MPs including South Cambs MP Anthony Browne voted against a new law which would have seen water companies in court for sewage spills.
The 2024 ENDS Power List for politicians who have championed environmental causes has been published. It is a list of 50 politicians in the country and Pippa is honoured to be part of that list!
