Joint statement on Beckenham Odeon

From Liam Conlon MP & Councillors Gita Bapat, Steven Jefferies and Chloe-Jane Ross

We are writing jointly as the MP for Beckenham and Penge and the three Ward Councillors for Beckenham Town and Copers Cope following the announcement that Beckenham Odeon is expected to close at the end of November.

We know how much this news has affected our community. Thousands of residents have contacted us to share their concerns, memories and hopes for the future of the cinema.

Beckenham Odeon has been part of our town for generations. The site has shown films for almost 100 years and is an important part of Beckenham High Street and our cultural and community life, hosting films, classes and events enjoyed by people of all ages.

What happens next

We are working together to understand the circumstances surrounding the closure and explore the options for the future.

We are talking to Citygate Church to better understand their plans for the building and are due to meet with them shortly. We are also seeking further information from Odeon and reviewing the planning policies and regulations that would apply to any proposed change of use from a cinema.

There are still important questions to answer, including whether there is a realistic opportunity for a cinema to continue operating at the site and how this important building can remain accessible to all and continue to play a role in our community.

We are also speaking with those involved in similar community campaigns, including the Everyman Cinema in Crystal Palace and the former theatre in Walthamstow, to understand what may be relevant to Beckenham.

Keeping residents involved

We will continue to listen to residents and ensure the community has a strong voice as proposals develop.

In the coming weeks we will hold a public meeting, open to everyone, where we will share what we have learned, answer questions and discuss the options for the future of the site. Details will be published shortly and we will continue to provide updates as we learn more.
