Poll Shows Lib Dems Just 3% Behind the Tories in Brecon, Radnor & Cwm Tawe

The latest poll from YouGov has revealed that it is a clear two-horse race between the Liberal Democrats and Conservative Party in Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe at the next election, with Lib Dem David Chadwick a close second to the incumbent Conservative MP Fay Jones. 

The MRP poll by YouGov, and reported by The Times, predicts that the Liberal Democrats are just three percentage points behind the Conservatives with Labour in third. 

It follows on from four historic parliamentary by-election wins for the Liberal Democrats over Conservative MPs in rural constituencies in recent years, including across the border in North Shropshire as well as the Liberal Democrats becoming the largest party on Powys Council at the last local elections.

The Liberal Democrats are looking to win seats across the so-called ‘Blue Wall” at the next general election, as lifelong Conservative voters in rural seats desert Rishi Sunak's party in their droves. 

The seat of Brecon & Radnorshire has historically been a close contest between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, with the Liberal Democrats last winning the seat in August 2019. Previously the Liberal Democrats held the seat between 1997 and 2015. 

Liberal Democrat candidate for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe David Chadwick said:

“This poll shows that Labour can’t win here, and that the next election in Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe will be a clear two-horse race between the Liberal Democrats and the Conservative Party as it has been since the 1980s.  

“The Liberal Democrats are on the up after our big gains at the local elections and our four stunning parliamentary by-election wins against the Conservatives.

“More and more local people are telling me they are backing our campaign because they’re fed up with being taken for granted by this Conservative government.

“After years of public services collapsing in on themselves, soaring prices in the shops and our rivers being polluted by filthy sewage, it’s clear it’s time for a change in Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe.

“I’m appealing to those who would normally back Labour, the Greens or Plaid Cymru; alongside those Conservatives who no longer recognise the party under its current state, to back our campaign and give our local area a strong voice in Parliament who will stand up for our interests.”
