Public Meeting in Oakham with Bill Newton Dunn

Bill Newton Dunn, MEP for the East Midlands, was the main speaker at the Oakham Public Meeting on Thurs Nov 2nd. There was a lively discussion on the challenges ahead for Europe such as climate change and cross-border crime. Bill had had a great success last week in encouraging the European Parliament to vote for a formal study on the need for a federal police force for Europe.

Conference 2006

LDEG had a very successful conference with three packed fringe events and a busy stall. The first fringe event was "The EU Constitution - what next?" with Andrew Duff MEP and Michael Moore MP, followed by "Can the EU switch off climate change?" with Chris Davies MEP, Chris Huhne MP and Fiona Harvey (FT environment correspondent). The third event was "Question Time on the EU" with Paddy Ashdown, HE The Turkish Ambassador, Diana Wallis MEP and Steve Richards (political correspondent with The Independent). WHERE'S BLAIR WHEN THE ENVIRONMENT NEEDS HIM?

In response to reports that the Prime Minister has joined with four other European governments to block a European Commission proposal to create the EU's first legal nuclear safety standards, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, has called on the Government to explain why it is taking such anti-environmental action.
