RBKC must do more to end the scourge of inappropriately parked e-bikes on our streets
E-bike schemes can play an important role in our transport system, cleaning up our air and reducing traffic on our roads. However, the rapid growth of these schemes in the borough has seen too many bikes inappropriately dumped on our streets, obstructing pavements and walkways. This puts pedestrians at risk by forcing them onto the road and prevents disabled and visually impaired residents from getting around their community.
Existing parking bays fill quickly, leading to bikes overflowing onto pavements and blocking safe access to residents’ homes. A fall in the number of resident parking permits has created space on our streets which could be used for additional e-bike bays to tackle this problem. Instead, the council wants to use up this space by introducing 2000 car parking permits, exclusively for owners of second homes.
Alexandra Ames, Liberal Democrat Campaigner for Queen’s Gate ward said...
“The council has failed to keep pavements clear and safe. They must take urgent action to build more cycle parking bays and hold operators to account for poor parking”
Cllr Tim Verboven added...
“E-bikes can play an important role in improving mobility, but this should not come at the expense of resident’s safety. We need to stop these bikes from blocking our pavements."
