Liberal Democrat councillors in Mickleover have launched a campaign to protect green spaces in their area of the city Cllr Hilary Jones is concerned that government changes to planning rules could put green spaces at risk from development. She has therefore launched a petition to protect green spaces in Mickleover which can be signed at http://campaigns.libdems.org.uk/protectourgreenspaces Cllr Jones said "To protect our local green spaces we need to ensure that our local rules specifically protect them.I am asking for the city council to write that protection into our local rules. The council is also lobbying government to strengthen planning rules so that green spaces in places like Mickleover can be given greater protection."
A budget monitoring report prepared for the WC 'cabinet' meeting on October 18th reveals that despite throwing the Chief Executive overboard the WC hot air balloon is still plummeting to the ground. The next object to be ejected will be the proposed environmental improvements which would've helped avoid future fines for excessive CO2 emissions. Half a million pounds will also have to be raided from the reserves.
Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has announced a fund of £250m to be bid for by councils who wish to keep weekly residual waste collection. Speaking to the BBC he said he wanted to go back to a system of "weekly refuge (sic) collections". He also stated that: "We don't want to see people in landfill". However the money is unlikely to exceed the costs of Landfill Tax and the Landfill Allowances Trading Scheme which the EU and the government have been using to encourage councils to increase recycling.
