Transport White Paper must have a long term strategy - Thurso

20 Jul 2004

Commenting ahead of Alistair Darling's announcement on Tuesday for the Government's future plans for transport, Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary John Thurso MP said:

"The long discredited 10 year plan for transport was characterised by unrealistic targets, dodgy finance and a complete lack of long-term vision.

"This new strategic plan must address those deficiencies. It must have a long-term strategy across all modes of transport that addresses the need for investment in new infrastructure, and the need to balance transport demands with reductions in emissions.

"In the railways white paper released last week, the Government have accepted their duty to provide strategic leadership. This now needs to be translated into a realistic plan for the next two decades and beyond."
