Supermarkets must source organic food locally - George

19 Apr 2004

Supermarkets are still failing to buy home grown organic produce, and continue to import large quantities from abroad, according to a Soil Association report.

Commenting, Andrew George MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Food and Rural Affairs Secretary, said:

"The big four supermarkets are doing very little to reduce the food miles of their organic wares by attempting to source food locally.

"This is an embarrassing report from the Soil Association, and will hopefully force supermarkets into seriously reviewing their purchasing policies.

"The English Food and Farming Partnership, set up by the Government, should provide a food marketing board service.

"This would allow British organic farmers to collaborate and provide the scale of supply required by supermarkets."
