VINCE CABLE TO VISIT NOTTINGHAM
"The importance of Green issues to the future of the Liberal Democrats is clearly illustrated by the high-profile line-up of speakers at the conference organised in Nottingham to celebrate the 30th birthday of the environmental pressure group of the party, the Green Liberal Democrats" - so said the conference organiser, Keith Melton, who also organised the first conference in the city back in 1988.
Keith, who was the Founding Chair of the green pressure group 30 years ago, also welcomed the recent upsurge in support for the Liberal Democrats in last week`s Local Election results. "Mainstream media have largely under-reported the fact that the Lib Dems have made more net gains of councillors than the two major parties combined and have broken through to take control of four councils in London and Cambridgeshire including Richmond-upon-Thames, Kingston-upon-Thames, in London and South Cambridgeshire and Three Rivers"
"Party leader, Sir Vince Cable and two more of our MPs, Wera Hobhouse and Sir Ed Davey are coming to help us celebrate this green milestone event at a time of increasing support for our party in the country. The rebirth of our party`s electoral fortunes are partly down to vigorous local campaigning, partly down to our pro-European stance, but also partly due to a recognition that our forward-thinking views on the Climate catastrophe and plastic pollution of our oceans are needed now more than ever before. The conference will be opened by Sir Simon Hughes, former MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, who was the keynote speaker in 1988."
The Green Liberal Democrats are organising the conference in Nottingham to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their inaugural conference - also held in Nottingham - when the Liberal Party merged with the SDP to form the Liberal Democrats. Keith Melton had previously been chairman of the campaigning Liberal Ecology Group, LEG. Keith pointed out that these speakers represented one quarter of the Liberal Democrats current presence in the Mother of Parliaments. (The conference programme is attached for information)
This year`s conference will take place on Saturday 19th May 2018 at the Jubilee Campus of Nottingham University, so we have attached a map of the Jubilee Campus for you to see where your reporters and photographers need to be. The conference will be held in the Business School South (building 7 on the map).
The conference will start at 11.00 am and run through until 6.00 pm. And the key speakers will be arriving at different times of the day so please liaise with us to arrange interviews and/or photo ops with each, or all, of the speakers.
The conference will be launched at 11am by former Lib Dem MP, Sir Simon Hughes, who was also the keynote speaker at the group`s inaugural event.
Wera Hobhouse MP will be speaking about the problems of Air Pollution and promoting the idea of a new Clean Air act to tackle automobile pollutants. Wera will also be introducing Sir Vince Cable at 4pm in the afternoon.
Formerly Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, and an Honorary Professor in Economics at the Nottingham University, Vince Cable will be speaking of his involvement in helping to write the Brundtland Commission report back in 1987. It was this report that introduced the world to the, then novel, idea of Sustainable Development. Vince Cable`s role in helping to write that report is not well-known, but it was a turning point in helping to develop a better approach to economics for many countries of the world. When in office during the Coalition Years, Cable was Secretary of State for Business in the cabinet and pushed through legislation to create the Green Investment Bank which was beginning to show how Environmental Investment should be conducted. The Green Investment Bank has since been sold off by the Tory Government to a private Australian investor not particularly interested in the environmental benefits the Bank could create.
Vince Cable has been strongly critical of the decision to sell off the bank he had created. "The government sold off the Green Investment Bank on the, in my view, rather specious grounds that there was no longer any market failure," he said. "That may well be true of offshore wind, but it is not true of the many other things the Bank was mandated to do, such as energy efficiency and waste, and there are big renewables technologies coming down the track like tidal lagoons that could have come under the remit of the Bank."
