New leader Ming hits green issues from the start

Sir Menzies Campbell

Ming Campbell is the new leader of the Liberal Democrats, and has already highlighted environmental issues strongly. At his first Prime Ministers Questions he challenged the PM over UK emissions, calling attention to apparent confusion in Whitehall over the Government's ability to meet emissions targets.

Sir Menzies pointed out that "the Department of Environment says we must, the Department of Trade & Industry says we can't.' He added, 'Who is right, and who is going to win?" The Prime Minister admitted it would be 'highly challenging' to meet the target. Sir Menzies also asked the Prime Minister why the government has not implemented many of the low carbon solutions in 2003's Energy White Paper.

Green LibDems will be seeking an early meeting with Ming to ensure the green agenda continues to be addressed vigorously.
