Councillor Tim Styles is the Liberal Democrat candidate for the constituency of St Austell and Newquay which, since its creation in 2010, has alternated between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. Currently Conservative... so, time for a change! News

Tim moved to the constituency at the age of nine and attended schools in both St Austell and Newquay. He has not been a career politician and only joined the party in 2016, after the referendum. Tim was elected as a councillor for Gover Ward in St Austell in 2017. Following a successful year as Deputy Mayor in 2018, he is currently the Mayor of St Austell.

Distinguished Service record

Tim has a distinguished service record in the armed forces and police. He served in the Fleet Air Arm, Royal Navy, on board HMS Hermes and Bulwark. He then joined the Metropolitan Police, based at Chelsea, from where he witnessed the IRA bombing of Harrods, which killed and injured a number of his colleagues. He transferred to the Devon and Cornwall Police to be closer to home.

Deciding to self-fund his further education in his mid-thirties, Tim read law at Plymouth before being called to the Bar at Middle Temple in London. Tim now practises as an employment law consultant representing both businesses and workers in employment tribunals. He often advises on employment issues on a pro bono basis as legal aid is not available in employment disputes.

Tim Styles

"I've lived in St Austell most of my life and have based my business here. For the past 20 years I've been
representing individuals and businesses in employment tribunals throughout the south west, helping
resolve contentious issues such as unfair dismissal, breach of contract and all types of discrimination

I champion individual rights and want to live in a society where everyone has equality of opportunity
without regard to their social background, ethnicity or sexuality."

Green Liberal Democrats: Hot Rocks!

Tim Styles is a member of the Green Liberal Democrats and is enthusiastic about the opportunities highlighted in the Liberal Democrat Manifesto for building a better economy around new Green Investment!

"As a Green Liberal Democrat the climate and environment are always at the forefront of my mind when I'm out campaigning
in my constituency. I'm so lucky that we have the Eden Project, which has secured funding from Cornwall Council and the
EU to create energy from the hot rocks beneath our feet.

.

This fantastic renewable resource will provide almost limitless heat and energy for our local communities. We also have lithium
and cobalt deposits, vital in the manufacture of batteries and we have a company actively exploring the commercial
benefits of these valuable resources. I'm excited for the future, we can put mid-Cornwall firmly on the map
when it comes to renewable energy and green jobs
