Rhys Taylor - Advocate for Air Quality
NewsCouncillor Rhys Taylor is the Liberal Democrat candidate for Cardiff North, and identifies as a Social Liberal. As a Welsh Liberal Democrat, Rhys has helped form policy on decarbonisation and clean air. He is included in a list of top candidates in PR Week of 7th November 2019.
He has been a councillor for Cardiff City Council since 2017 and, as such, has campaigned both within Cardiff and throughout Wales for a commitment to a net-zero-carbon building standard and a reduction in vehicle pollution through the creation of a Cardiff Clean Air Zone and a new Clean Air Act for Wales, adopting World Health Organisation guidelines on emissions to protect the most vulnerable.
"My big concern is air pollution and the public health crisis. Dangerous levels of air pollution contribute to 40,000 premature deaths every year in the UK and we need to be bolder in tackling emissions and people's exposure."

Pension fund divestment
More generally, Councillor Rhys Taylor has lobbied the Welsh government on divestment of public pensions from fossil fuels and other innovative policy changes aimed at protecting the planet. Public pension funds should always take the moral high ground as a factor of mutual benefit for society - if they damage the public interest (which is clearly the case for investments in fossil fuels!) then there is a very high level imperative to use those funds for greater benefit.
Rhys is Senior Policy and Public Affairs Officer at a national charity for homeless people.
He is also a school governor and a trustee of a students' union.
