Green Hero - Oli Henman
Putting "sustainable" into Sustainable Development News
Oli Henman is a lifelong campaigner for a fairer, more sustainable society, he works on projects to tackle the climate emergency and deliver a just transition locally, nationally and internationally. Oli is the Liberal Democrat candidate for the constituency of Lewes.
He is an environmental and human rights campaigner with twenty years' experience in advocacy for international charities including a series of UN projects, with partners across South America, Africa and Asia. Oli has worked to promote citizen participation and inclusion - in particular developing community engagement for a just and sustainable future, national campaigning and global policy change.
In 2015, Oli was directly involved, alongside charity leaders, in the UN negotiations on a global framework for our common future, the UN's - Sustainable Development* Goals. Following the agreement of this global framework, over the past 3 years Councillor Henman has set up a new network called Action for Sustainable Development to provide a space to hold governments to account for their agreements, share key projects and develop knowledge on climate and rights from around the world.
[*The most frequently quoted definition of sustainable develoment is from Our Common Future, also known as the
Brundtland Report: "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."]
Roadbuilding - 'undercover plans' for A27 challenged
Councillor Henman recently challenged local tories for not being open about plans for the A27 in the Lewes constituency
"We do not need new road-building at a time when government at all levels is declaring a climate
emergency. We should be moving to a more flexible and environmentally sustainable approach to
transport and identifying creative ways to encourage people to limit their carbon footprint while travelling.
The £450 million now proposed is not needed for the existing road. Even dualling the current route
would have a major impact on surrounding villages, and the fact there are plans for consultation
on possible routes makes it clear that this would indeed be a new road."

Tackling the climate emergency
There needs to be a strong creative response to tackling the climate emergency if we are to make the kind of urgent progress needed to avert the worst possibilities of the disruptions the climate crisis could cause if it is not slowed down very soon. Pay attention to the ideas Oli Henman puts forward in this short video clip
