Putting the 'sustainable' into sustainable development for the 21st century
NewsGideon Amos is the Liberal Democrat candidate for Taunton Deane in Somerset, where he seeks to wrest the seat from the Tory hands into which it fell in 2015 after the amalgamation with Taunton, Jeremy Browne's constituency. He first stood in 2017, when he increased the LibDem vote by 6%, to 28%. As he says, Gideon stands "squarely in the Liberal tradition of Somerset where [he] grew up."
Gideon is a chartered architect, planner and qualified urban designer, who provides strategic advice on design, development and consenting to major national infrastructure projects, including a major new offshore windfarm in the North Sea and the Swansea Tidal Lagoon, the consenting of which he led during a 5 year spell in the senior civil service. He is a former Chief Executive of the Town and Country Planning Association, (the original Garden Cities Association), and a Council member of the National Infrastructure Planning Association.
Transformation - Zero Carbon Renewable energy
It is tempting to see Gideon's architectural efforts at building a physical city on a hill or beacon of hope reflected in his wider desire for a metaphorical transformation of our communities, seeking fairness for all. He has always campaigned in the defence of schools, the NHS and other key public services. He successfully led a campaign to keep the Royal Marines in Taunton, and is now leading a campaign in opposition to the proposed cuts to the local fire services.
But, above all, Gideon is passionate about environmental issues, particularly of course the climate emergency. Gideon manages large scale renewable projects and has a national record of delivering zero-carbon renewable energy projects. His consistent and unrelenting efforts to save our planet were recognised in 2009, when he was awarded the OBE for services to sustainable development.
Gideon Amos said, "I am delighted to have the opportunity to represent people in Taunton Deane. It will be a privilege to put forward the kind of new planet-positive agenda, with which we won our local elections on 2nd May. No other party is speaking the language of common sense with the urgency that's needed on these issues - there is a huge gap that we have a responsibility to fill.
