Government must not throw caution to the wind on GM - George

29 Jan 2004

GM sweet corn should be imported to the EU as food, according to a decision by the European Commission. This move has still be to be ratified by the Council of Ministers, and DEFRA ministers are expected to make their decision about GM crops in the next couple of weeks.

Commenting Andrew George MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Food and Rural Affairs Secretary, said:

"If the Government give the go-ahead for GM crops to be grown in the UK, they'll be leaping ahead of public opinion and ignoring scientific caution.

"Rather than rushing headlong towards an irreversible decision on growing GM crops in Britain, the Government should be commissioning independent research to address the still significant gaps in our knowledge of their environmental effects."
