Europe and the Environment
"Stay European" Conference examines the environment...
Green Liberal Democrats have been asked by the campaigning group "Stay European"* to organise a fringe session for their conference on Saturday 21st November. Rather than keeping the session to themselves "Stay European" have kindly opened the session to others who may be interested. You can register for the conference here >> https://www.stayeuropean.org/conference/ and a Zoom link will be sent to you for the meeting.
The meeting will take place on Zoom from 10 a.m. - 6p.m.
The 'Europe and the Environment' Session is at 4.00pm - 5.00pm and all are welcome.
Once you have registered for the conference a Zoom link will be sent to you via email.
Stay European is a UK-based grassroots campaign for individual EU citizenship. It is an independent campaign, not set up by any pre-existing pro-European group, but hoping to work collaboratively with all. Stay European was established in January 2020 and has gathered over 100,000 supporters so far. Its campaign is run by volunteers and has no staff members
We still do not know what our relationship with the European Union is going to look like after January 1st, but it seems increasingly likely that we are, in many ways, going to be worse off than we are at present. Not least, there will be a parting of the ways in terms of environmental issues. Our proposed fringe meeting will examine the likely and possible consequences of moving away from our `lock-step` links to Europe.
GLD Chair, Keith Melton, will be chairing the session and we have organised an excellent line up of speakers for the event.
Bavarian representative to the Bundestag, FDP MP, Lukas Köhler, will be our first speaker. Lukas is a member of the Bundestag`s Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, and has his home in Munich. From 2015 until his election to the Bundestag he was the manager of the Center for Environmental Ethics and Environmental Education in Munich.
Also speaking will be our Climate change spokesperson in the House of Commons, Sarah Olney, MP, who will bring us up to date with legislation going through Parliament at the moment and provide us with a perspective to assess the current changes as we come out or the EU fully in a few weeks time.
Our final speaker will be our own Green Lib Dem Executive committee member, Councillor Jane Brophy, former MEP for the North West and long-time GLD member. In fact Jane was a young Radical member of the Liberal Ecology Group back in the day before the parties merged into the Liberal Democrats. Jane will explore the elements of the EU`s Green deal policy where we are likely to miss out now that we have left the EU.
Come and Join us at 4.00pm this Saturday, 21st November, by registering for the "Stay European" conference at the website below.
