Consumers must now signal their real wishes on GM - George

19 May 2004

Commenting on the European Commission's approval for the marketing of GM sweetcorn, Andrew George MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Food and Rural Affairs Secretary, said:

"The UK decision to support the approval of GM maize was taken by a Government quango -Food Standards Agency - without any reference to either Parliament or public opinion.

"But it should have been a question of informed choice.

"If European consumers choose not to have it, then perhaps the penny will finally drop and those who are trying to push the stuff on us will get the message."
