Consumers and farmers want choice - George

13 May 2004

Commenting on the use of GM soya and maize for cattle feed in the UK's dairy industry, Andrew George MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Food and Rural Affairs Secretary, said:

"Consumers want to make an informed choice about the GM content in the milk they buy, and farmers will want to respond to that demand.

"In order for this to happen, British agriculture needs to provide a domestic alternative to the large quantities of imported GM feed for cattle.

"Growing numbers of consumers are keen to receive reassurances that they are not purchasing a product which supports biotech companies who may be damaging the environment and have potentially overbearing control on the whole food production process."
