Green Hero - Jane Brophy
PPC for Altrincham and Sale West
Jane is currently the Altrincham and Sale West Parliamentary constituency (in Trafford, Greater Manchester). She was part of the Liberal Democrat Leadership Programme of Parliamentary Candidates 2010-15. Jane was the Lib Dem candidate for Greater Manchester Metro Mayor in May 2017.
Jane was first elected to Trafford Council in 1994 representing Village Ward in Timperley. She had a gap of five years whilst her children were young and then returned in 2003. In total she has been a councillor for 25 years representing the Timperley area (currently Timperley North Ward).
She went to primary school in the Brooklands area, and secondary school in Manchester and has lived with her family in Timperley for over 30 years. She studied Biochemistry at the University of Leeds, and then went on to train in Nutrition and Dietetics as a postgraduate. Jane has had a long career in the NHS and currently works at Wythenshawe Hospital as a Diabetes Dietitian. For a brief period from 2019 - 2020 she left her NHS work to take up the role of MEP for the Northwest of England.
When Jane was elected as an MEP for the North West of England in May 2019 until Brexit on 31st January 2020, she sat as a full member of both the Employment & Social Affairs Committee; and the Delegation to Brazil and as a substitute member on the Environment, Public Health & Food Safety Committee and the Delegation to Afghanistan. As a Liberal Democrat MEP Jane was a member of the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament.
As an elected councillor for Timperley North ward has served on the Trafford Health Scrutiny Committee, the Health and Wellbeing Board and more recently the Accounts and Audit Committee. Over the years she has served as a School Governor for Altrincham College, the Willows Primary School, Heyes Lane Primary School and Cloverlea Primary School.
She has been a champion for causes within in her community, being one of the founding members of the Friends of Pickering Lodge Park and Friends of Moss Park Gardens. She was one of the first in Trafford to initiate local litter picking activities in Timperley and continues to support these community groups.
Jane has three grown up children who all still live with them in Timperley. Jane has a love of music, nature and gardening and relishes having time for her hobbies. She was one of the first UK Woodland Trust councillor trees champion and is passionate about promoting trees, green spaces and biodiversity within the urban area.
