Continuing our long-standing campaign to clean up Brent

Brent Liberal Democrats are continuing their long-standing campaign to clean up Brent’s streets and tackle fly-tipping after years of decline under the Labour Council.

Labour’s decision to scrap routine street cleaning, alongside sharply rising bulky waste charges, has left many neighbourhoods dirtier. Inflated bulky waste fees have encouraged rogue landlords and others to avoid the charge by dumping bulky waste on streets and estates, making the problem worse for residents.

Liberal Democrat plans would reintroduce regular, scheduled street cleaning on residential roads, reversing Labour’s cuts. Street cleanliness would be assessed using the independent Keep Britain Tidy grading system, providing clear and objective standards rather than box-ticking. Roads that repeatedly fall below acceptable standards would receive extra cleaning and targeted action until conditions improve.

To tackle persistent fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour, Liberal Democrats would increase enforcement in hotspot locations, with officers working at the times offences actually occur, including evenings and nights. CCTV would be expanded in these areas, funded through CIL and other sources, with enforcement coordinated closely with the police.

They would reduce bulky waste charges, continue community skips and introduce door-to-door bulky waste collections for eligible residents on community skip days, making disposal easier for elderly and disabled residents.

Liberal Democrats would also run a public health campaign on the harms of chewing tobacco, working with local communities while lobbying the government for a national ban.

Labour’s cuts to street cleaning and their inflated bulky waste charges have made Brent dirtier and encouraged rogue landlords to dump waste rather than dispose of it properly. Our long-standing campaign is about clean streets, fair rules, and enforcement that actually works. Brent deserves better than the neglect residents have been forced to put up with.

Cllr Paul Lorber, Leader of the Brent Liberal Democrats

Petition: Cleaning Up Brent

Brent’s streets have become dirtier, routine cleaning has been cut back and fly-tipping has increased, driven in part by high bulky waste charges that allow rogue landlords to dump waste with little consequence.

We call on Brent Council to:

  • Reintroduce regular, scheduled street cleaning on residential roads
  • Use the Keep Britain Tidy grading system to measure cleanliness transparently
  • Take stronger action against fly-tipping, including evening and night enforcement
  • Reduce bulky waste charges that encourage illegal dumping
  • Expand community skips, assisted collections and target CCTV in hotspot areas
