Councillor Maria Linforth-Hall of St George’s ward wrote to the CEO of Southwark Council to request an emergency response to address black mould in homes.

This week, the death of a two year-old boy in Rochdale was attributed to a respiratory condition caused by exposure to black mould.

A Housing Ombudsman report on mould and damp in 2021 found that Southwark Council had the fifth-worst mismanagement rate of 142 landlords.

The CEO of Southwark Council has, in response to Councillor Linforth-Hall, promised to make tackling black mould a priority in Southwark.

Commenting, Southwark Liberal Democrat Health and Wellbeing Spokesperson Cllr Maria Linforth-Hall said: “As a councillor, I regularly receive complaints from residents regarding black mould in their homes, many from parents concerned for the health of their children. The harrowing report that the death of a two year-old has been attributed to black mould makes it clear that we need an emergency response to address this problem in Southwark and ensure no one’s home is a health risk.”
