Lower Road to be Redesigned

In a meeting between the council and Liberal Democrat Councillor Adam Hood, the council said that a total redesign of the Lower Road scheme is now on the cards.

However, Cllr Hood, who has been campaigning on behalf of residents facing unbearable traffic issues for over a year, has slammed the council for getting it so wrong in the first place, despite multiple warnings.

The Surrey Docks councillor had previously celebrated some small concessions the council had made around parking bays and technical changes, but maintained that a rethink of the whole road network around Canada Water was needed.

The Lower Road Cycle Lane, a joint project between TfL and Southwark Council, was formally opened in March 2024 following months of road works chaos, sparking protest from residents and local Liberal Democrat councillors.

Whilst the councillors supported the need for more cycling infrastructure, they slammed the scheme for being poorly thought through, with cyclists and car users alike both condemning the traffic and safety issues the scheme introduced.

The meeting confirmed that a report outlining a redesign would be made public and go to consultation in around mid-February.

Commenting, Surrey Docks Councillor Adam Hood said:

“Whilst this is a big win for residents and our Liberal Democrat campaign, the fact the council and TfL got this so wrong in the first place represents a huge waste of taxpayers’ time and money. Residents and councillors have been saying the Lower Road scheme would cause chaos from the very start, and now the council is having to start all over again.”
