If they can’t run an election, how can they run a council?

Southwark Liberal Democrats have responded to the news that Labour’s London Regional Party may intervene to force a rerun of Southwark Labour’s botched leadership election, which is said to have broken rules by allowing proxy voting.
It’s understood that Cllr James McAsh and Cllr Sarah King drew in the final round of voting, which under Labour group rules looks to first preference votes to decide the winner.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Victor Chamberlain said:
“How can residents have any trust in the leadership of a political party that runs its own internal affairs so shoddily? They can’t run a leadership election, let alone a council. It’s no wonder that 15 years of Labour rule here in Southwark has seen standards fall so low.
Residents deserve serious leadership that will deliver genuinely affordable housing, clean and safe streets, and who will tackle the cost of living crisis. Instead, they’re just getting student union politics that is so typical of the Labour party.”
