Cole-Hamilton cheers on Scotland and demands more support for hospitality
Ahead of Scotland’s first World Cup game, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton has wished the national team the best of luck and urged the SNP to deliver proper support for Scotland’s hospitality sector.
Scottish Liberal Democrats were the first to call for late night opening hours for pubs in Scotland.
The party also secured £178 million to provide many businesses, including pubs and bars, with relief from hikes in their business rates.
The Scottish Liberal Democrat leader warned, however, that many hospitality venues are still facing significant challenges.
Some local authorities have seen a drop of more than 60% in the number of pubs in their area over the past 15 years.
Across Scotland, there was a net loss of more than 600 pubs between 2010 and 2025.
Alex said:
“This is a historic moment for Scotland, and like everyone across the country, I will be cheering on our national team this weekend.
“The World Cup also presents a massive opportunity for our hospitality sector, and my party was proud to secure support for the many venues struggling with colossal hikes in their business rates.
“But when that final whistle blows, there will still be many pubs in Scotland facing an existential cliff edge.
“The revaluation has already sent too many businesses to the wall, as well as exposing the fundamental flaws in the system.
“While the First Minister enjoys a pint of Boston’s best this weekend, he should spare a thought for struggling pubs at home.
“And when he does get back, he should be clear about whether he will finally pull the plug on this punitive pub rates rise, once and for all.”
