Daniel O'Malley

Personal Statement:

I’m standing for the National Executive because I believe this is a vital moment for the Scottish Liberal Democrats to consolidate our growth, build our organisation, and strengthen our voice as the progressive, pro-European alternative in Scotland.
I have been a Liberal Democrat for over a decade. From my early days campaigning in Aberdeenshire and North East Fife to serving as Glasgow Local Party Chair during the 2024 General Election, I’ve seen first-hand the energy and dedication of our members. My goal is to ensure that energy is matched by strong internal support, clear strategic direction, and modern campaigning infrastructure.
Professionally, I bring experience leading policy, strategy, and public affairs across sectors. I’ve managed teams, developed national influencing plans, and represented organisations at the highest levels of government. I know how to connect long-term policy thinking with real-world campaigning, and how to build the partnerships that make change happen.
In my recent role at the Scottish Refugee Council, I work daily with ministers, MPs, MSPs, and local authorities to secure practical outcomes for people in need. Those same relationship-building and negotiation skills would help strengthen how our party engages externally and operates internally.
As a proud Glaswegian and party spokesperson on transport, I want to see us champion policies that make Scotland fairer, greener, and better connected. But that starts with a strong party foundation, one that supports members, develops candidates, and reflects the communities we seek to serve.
If elected, I will bring my experience, energy, and strategic focus to the National Executive to help the Scottish Liberal Democrats grow with confidence and purpose.

What skills/experience will you bring to the role?

I bring over a decade of political, campaigning, and policy experience spanning Westminster, Holyrood, and the charity sector, grounded in a lifelong commitment to Liberal Democrat values of fairness, freedom, and opportunity.
My career has focused on turning ideas into impact. As Policy & Public Affairs Specialist at the Scottish Refugee Council, I led national influencing work across both parliaments, managing a team, budget, and strategy. I have secured major advocacy wins, including giving oral evidence to a Westminster Bill Committee and coordinating a bilateral meeting between the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the First Minister. This role demanded strategic thinking, political judgement, and coalition-building across parties and institutions, skills I would bring directly to the National Executive.
Previously, as Policy & Public Affairs Manager at Diabetes Scotland, I led the Diabetes Tech Can’t Wait campaign, securing £8.8 million in Scottish Government funding for lifesaving diabetes technology. The campaign was nominated for SCVO Campaign of the Year and succeeded through effective message discipline, partnership working, and cross-party engagement, all essential tools for driving Liberal Democrat strategy and visibility.
Earlier in my career, I worked as a Campaign Organiser in North East Fife and Constituency Organiser for David Laws MP, managing election operations, messaging, and digital strategy. We delivered multiple by-election victories and built resilient local campaigning infrastructure. I understand the pressures faced by activists and candidates at every level and how to design support systems that help them succeed.
In addition to my campaign and policy experience, I bring strong leadership and governance skills. Within the party, I served as Glasgow Local Party Chair through the 2024 General Election, ensuring full candidate coverage across the city, and currently act as Scottish Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesperson.
Across all my work, I’ve combined strategic insight with practical delivery. I believe the National Executive must play an enabling role, empowering members, strengthening local parties, and ensuring the Scottish party’s structures are fit for purpose as we grow. My experience of policy, campaigning, and organisational leadership gives me the tools to contribute constructively, think long-term, and ensure the party’s strategy matches its ambition.

What do you hope to achieve if elected?

If elected to the National Executive, my priority will be to ensure the Scottish Liberal Democrats are managed with steadiness, transparency, and strategic focus — enabling our staff, volunteers, and candidates to do their best work. I believe that effective governance isn’t about grand gestures but about building the systems and culture that allow the party to function efficiently, grow sustainably, and deliver results at every level.
First and foremost, I want to ensure that our resources, financial, human, and organisational, are used effectively and strategically. The party’s staff are at the heart of our success; they deliver the day-to-day operations that keep us campaigning, recruiting, and visible. I want to see the National Executive provide them with the clarity, support, and stability they need to plan and deliver with confidence. That means sensible budgeting, forward planning, and clear communication between elected committees and staff, ensuring we are proactive, not reactive, in how we manage our work.
Secondly, I want to strengthen how we support our candidates and local parties. Too often, excellent people are willing to stand but lack the guidance, training, or resources to campaign effectively. We must take a long-term approach to candidate development, identifying, mentoring, and supporting potential candidates well in advance of elections. I want to see stronger regional coordination, better use of digital tools, and a more consistent approach to campaign planning and local party development.
Thirdly, I hope to contribute to a culture of collaboration and mutual respect between staff, elected members, and volunteers. Our shared goal is to grow the party’s influence and representation. That requires steady management, open dialogue, and clear expectations. The National Executive should model those values, providing oversight without micromanagement, and leadership that builds confidence rather than bureaucracy.
In short, I hope to bring stability, strategic thinking, and a constructive approach to the National Executive, ensuring the party’s resources are used wisely, our people are supported, and our candidates are empowered to win.
