Tim McKay
Candidate for East Lothian Coast and Lammermuirs
I have always been interested in politics, as I believe strongly that we should all try and contribute to making our society better and that participating in the democratic process is one of the best ways of achieving this. I co-founded the Liberal Society at university in St Andrews and my first general election campaign was for Menzies Campbell in NE Fife in 1979.
I am standing in this election for the East Lothian and Lammermuirs constituency, as the Liberal Democrat candidate, because I still believe in participating in the democratic process and giving the residents of East Lothian the chance to support a candidate that best reflects their values.
I graduated in Pure Maths & Theoretical Physics in 1980, then qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers & Lybrand (now PWC), and later as an Investment Analyst with the WM Company in Edinburgh.
I worked for 11 years in a variety of Edinburgh based Financial Services companies and thereafter taught at Napier University. During this period I stood in the 1992 UK general election for the East Lothian constituency.
As my academic career developed I travelled extensively, teaching in Poland, Singapore, Australia, the Cayman Islands, Hong Kong and mainland China. Eventually I became Head of Accounting and Finance at Napier.
I retired early in 2006. Then served from 2007 till 2012 as a councillor for the Inverleith ward in the City of Edinburgh. After that I was a member of various public bodies including the Legal Aid Board, the NHS Pension Board (as Chair) and the Accounts Commission (as Deputy Chair).
Outside of politics my main interests are tennis, cycling, running and bridge (at which I have represented Scotland).
