Medway Liberal Democrats support Global Recycling Day - 18th March 2020

Local Liberal Democrats strongly support 'Global Recycling Day' on March 18th. Recycling plays an important part of keeping our environment safe and clean across our towns and we have consistently been unequivocal in our support for raising awareness of local environmental issues. - Nationally, last year Liberal Democrats outlined a series of pledges, including a 70% recycling target and proposal to end waste plastic exports by 2030. These measures would be delivered under a Zero-Waste and Resource Efficiency Act and strengthen incentives to reduce packaging and waste sent to landfill and incineration.

Medway Liberal Democrats condemn Tories' destructive immigration proposals

The news that the government is to overhaul immigration rules, introducing a points-based system, has caused concern with Medway-based fruit growers, appealing for seasonal workers amid Brexit uncertainty to help with this year's harvest. . Farming is worth around £5.4 billion to Kent's economy, and supports over 85,000 jobs across the county. There are also now more than 40 brewers in Kent alone, and hops have seen a welcome revival in the 'Garden of England', with the return of organic hops, and other varieties grown locally, which are increasingly popular in craft beer and real ale. . Alan Bullion, a spokesperson for local Liberal Democrats said "The Tory government has proposed a seasonal agricultural workers scheme of 10,000 a year. Yet the NFU estimate is that the entire UK will need at least 60,000 workers to pick all the fruit and veg crops, of which a third of these will be required in Kent.
