Why are energy prices remaining stubbornly high?

I think a lot of people are wondering why the energy companies are not making bigger reductions in what they are charging the public. The reasons given around investment for the future and ensuring supplies, but anyone looking at their enormous profits can see that these are pretty thin excuses.

I think that the real reason that prices haven't come down more is the Labour Party's commitment to freeze energy prices. One can see why the big companies are reluctant to bring prices right down as they fear getting locked into a price which may prove to be uneconomic a year or two into the future.

It will be interesting to see what happens after the elections, and I hope that whoever is in power will move swiftly to ensure that the public are not paying more for their gas and electricity than they need to.
