'Trans rights ARE human rights' – says Medway Liberal Democrats campaigner

9 Apr 2023

The UK Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) wants to take away trans rights in their proposed amendment to Parliament in the Equalities act 2010 by not recognising a transgender person’s gender and referring to legal protections only for biological sex – the sex assigned at birth.

Medway Liberal Democrats stand with our Young Liberals and oppose this amendment. The amendment can be found here:

The amendment would mean that tran women or tran men wouldn't be able to use facilities or access safe spaces. It removes protection for transgender and non-binary individuals.

Ben Rist, candidate for Gillingham North and founding chair of Medway Young Liberals said "We stand with the trans and non-binary community, who are already marginalised. I've spoken to several transgender friends who are really scared and

upset that their existence is being threatened by these proposed changes from the UK Equalities and Human Rights Commission. We have to strongly oppose this.

This non-statutory guidance has an impact, not just here in Medway, but everywhere, causing misunderstanding and misinformation. It is fundamentally wrong to imply that trans women do not experience sexism due to ‘biological sex.’.

And that's why I'm outraged on behalf of Medway's LGBTQ+ community and trans advocates, and disappointed to see the EHRC once again showing hostility towards the trans community."
