Medway Liberal Democrats support Mental Health Awareness Week 10th - 16th May

In these challenging times, we believe that the future of mental health care should be community-based and locally focused, helping people experiencing mental ill health not just survive, but thrive. We are proud to support Mental Health Awareness Week hosted by the Mental Health Foundation and will continue to campaign for better mental health care this week and all year round.

This year's theme is 'nature' and Covid-19 has highlighted the importance of access to green spaces and nature for physical and mental health for those who live alone across our towns, or without access to gardens, balconies, or green space. The parks and green spaces around our towns are vital resources for us all, bringing our communities together and benefitting our physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Local Liberal Democrat and mental health campaigner Alan Collins Rosell said, "the past year or so has been particularly tough on people's wellbeing, but at the height of the restrictions the opportunity to leave the house for an hour's exercise helped many people reconnect with nature. I, for one, found my walks along the River Medway particularly beneficial for coping through lockdown.

"The effect our interaction with the natural world has on our wellbeing cannot be underestimated, but as the world opens back up, there is a real risk those positive connections will be lost again. That's why the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week this year is nature.

"Whether you take a wander through Riverside Country Park, or just spend time in your own garden, maintaining a connection with nature can boost your wellbeing and make us feel better about ourselves."

Lockdown, has highlighted the importance of access to green spaces and nature around Medway for physical and mental health, and exposure to nature as a key factor in maintaining positive mental health. Liberal Democrats would bring green spaces to the top of the agenda in every new local plan, and would improve environmental standards in the Medway Towns by giving special importance and value to the provision of green infrastructure, particularly in Medway's urban areas.

Liberal Democrats will always care for people's mental health.
