'Medway Council’s Climate Change Plans in Chaos' - say Liberal Democrats

Medway council's plans to fight the climate emergency has been given an embarrassing set back after it emerged that they might not get planning permission from themselves to install solar panels on their own building at Gun Wharf.

Medway council declared a climate emergency in 2019. Since then there has been very little concrete action by them to actually do anything to stop climate change. One of the few actions was the commitment to install solar panels on their office buildings, though that is more to do about them cutting their energy bills rather than a firm commitment to protect the planet.

However in an up and coming planning committee meeting, council planning officers are recommending that the committee refuse the planning request by Medway council to install the solar panels due to the building's listed status.

Stuart Bourne, spokesperson for Medway Liberal Democrats says 'You couldn't make this farcical nonsense up, Medway council cannot get planning permission from Medway council to allow Medway council to install solar panels on a Medway council owned building! This is completely embarrassing and symbolic of a council administration who continues to play lip service to the climate emergency. We need a change of council leadership now or we will never meet out carbon neutral targets.'

Medway Liberal Democrats are calling on all the members of planning committee to vote to install these vital solar panels, and we will monitoring and shaming those who choose not too.
