As local Tories call for fracking, "Not fracking likely" - say Medway Liberal Democrats

Fracking

Medway Liberal Democrats were heartened that our call - which we first proposed in October 2021 - for the council to remove fossil fuel investments from the council's pension portfolio was finally debated on Thursday 21st April.

We were shocked to hear the comments and suggestions from members of the Medway Conservative group saying that they would like more investment in fossil fuels, that there would be anarchy if we ended our dependency on them, and most shocking of all we heard from a Medway Council cabinet member that we need to permit fracking.

Previous fracking activities have demonstrated that there public health issues with them. Such operations involve many vehicle movements, ground disturbances that have led to earth tremors, and the real danger that fracking could lead to the pollution of local water supplies. Liberal Democrats are completely opposed to fracking, and we think our focus should be on truly renewable energy sources that don't destroy the planet.

Stuart Bourne, spokesperson for the Medway Liberal Democrats said, "I never thought I would ever need to say this publicly, but the Medway Lib Dems are against any form of fracking in Medway. We need to focus on investing on truly renewable sources of energy, and the fact the local Tories want to go back to fracking shows that they have no climate change credentials. They seem only to care about looking green rather than being green."The Medway Liberal Democrats will fight any planned fracking that takes place in Medway, and are fully committed to protecting our precious countryside from the ravishes of the fossil industry.
