Liberal Democrats campaign for Southfield Road crossing nearly ready for a consultation
After Liberal Democrat action, a consultation on a proposed Southfield Road crossing, to reduce accidents and deaths, is expected in early January.
Southfield Road is a busy throughfare between Acton and Chiswick used by buses, car drivers and pedestrians alike. It has a 20 mile per hour limit although you wouldn't know it! There have been many community-led speed measuring sessions over at least the past 10 years where residents have shown bus and car speeds going well above the advertised limit on the East-Western section of Southfield Road.
Proposals put forward by Liberal Democrat Councillors and residents have included implementing a crossing to strengthen safety issues and electronic speed displays which can be effective in making drivers more aware of their speed. These had been ignored by the Labour-run Ealing Council until now.
After several years of lobbying by residents and Southfield Liberal Democrat Councillors, it looks like there is some progress being made for crossing to be implemented in Southfield Road, subject to appropriate consultation.
The current timeline is that site surveys and investigation are taking place this month. This will be followed by a consultation to begin early in 2026. Following the investigation, survey and consultation, a clearer timeline should emerge for implementation.
Liberal Democrat Southfield Councillor Andrew Steed said: “Liberal Democrats say for many years the Southfield Councillors have worked with the local community to monitor and address speeding issues in Southfield Road and it has taken nearly ten years for Ealing Labour to take any notice of this issue. It is good to see that there is finally some progress on the matter. Once we have received clear indication that the consultation is open, we will share the link with residents to encourage continuing local input.”
