Lib Dems say pedestrians need wellies to wade through subways in Hanger Hill

Residents are wading through mud to enter Hanger Lane Station and the cross the road at Hanger Lane Gyratory. Liberal Democrat Councillors Athena Zissimos (Hanger Hill) and Councillor Jonathan Oxley (recently elected in late 2024) have been actively raising concerns about the quagmire, a culmination of leaves, dirt and blocked drains throughout the subway system that residents have to use to traverse under the Gyratory to get around.

Councillor Zissimos has engaged Transport for London (TfL, who are responsible for some of the area around Hanger Lane and the A40) and Greener Ealing (GEL) to address this appalling state of affairs. Sadly, there is a lack of coordination and consistency between the two bodies resulting in a distinct lack of action. Even if the leaves and dirt are swept up by GEL, it means little, when the drains are blocked which is a TfL matter, resulting in a quagmire, when it rains.

Crossing the subway system, to get to the tube, or to simply cross the road has become an awful exercise. How can you get to work in the morning in any decent state if you really need wellies to get to the tube?

Councillor Athena Zissimos - Environment, Streets, Parks and Climate Change Spokesperson said: “The Liberal Democrats are appalled at the filthy and unsanitary environment resulting from inadequate street cleansing across our borough. Ealing Labour have cut back leaf collection, street cleaning and reduced paid for green garden waste services! They have presided over the closure of Stirling Road recycling facilities in Acton and reduced access at Greenford depot to five days a week and fly tipping is on the rise.
