Camden Threatened by Labour’s Funding Cuts

Coins coming out of a jar

A devastating new report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies reveals that inner London boroughs stand to suffer real‑terms funding reductions of up to 12% under the Labour government’s proposed local authority funding overhaul, set to begin next April.

This is a real kick in the teeth for Camden. Despite our borough’s struggles with poverty, homelessness, and soaring housing costs, our communities are going to lose out.

Camden Labour spent the last decade telling residents that things would change for the better once Labour got into power nationally; how wrong they were. This report shows that Labour are just as keen to push through damaging cuts when it suits them, leaving our borough’s most vulnerable residents to pay the price.

Camden Lib Dem leader, Councillor Tom Simon, said:

"Labour has failed to reverse over a decade of structural underfunding and is now complicit in punishing boroughs most in need. Camden looks just as vulnerable now as it ever did under the Tories, maybe even more so.”

Groups such as London Councils have condemned these proposals. They warn that the plan understates true deprivation, especially the crushing costs of housing, and leaves the capital’s most vulnerable residents dangerously exposed.

There is nothing fair about the government’s Fair Funding Review. This is not reform.

The question now is a simple one - will Camden Labour stand up to the government?
