Camden Liberal Democrats are backing a petition to stop the closure of police front counters across London.

Katie Mansfield, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Hampstead & Highgate, and Tom Simon, Leader of the Opposition on Camden Council, have signed the Liberal Democrat petition opposing Metropolitan Police plans to close half of London’s front desks and cut opening hours at many others. Camden’s only 24/7 front counter is at Kentish Town Police Station and this will be lost, leaving Holborn Police Station as the only one in the borough open to the public, with limited opening hours.

Katie said “We hear time and time again on the doorstep that people want action on crime, from tackling mobile phone theft to stopping drug dealing. Local police stations and visible community policing are vital, offering practical help to victims of crime and providing a reassuring presence that builds trust.”

Tom added “At a time when the Met is trying to rebuild trust, slashing face-to-face contact is the last thing we should be doing. Expecting residents to travel to the very south of the borough, to Holborn, is simply not right. We urgently ask that the Mayor commit to funding the Met Police in full, instead of breaking his manifesto promise to keep a 24/7 front counter open in every borough.”

The petition calls for full funding for the Met Police to keep front counters open and accessible.
