Camden Lib Dems Stand United Against Division

At Thursday’s Council meeting, Lib Dem group-leader Cllr Tom Simon proposed a powerful motion reaffirming Camden’s commitment to being a Borough of Sanctuary. The motion celebrates Camden’s proud history of welcoming people seeking refuge, and recognises the enormous contribution immigrants make to our borough and to the UK.

The motion also condemned the Far Right demonstrations that took place in central London on 13th September, where messages of hatred and division stood in stark contrast to Camden’s values of unity, openness, and compassion.

Cllr Simon’s motion noted that while most immigrants are here legally and play a vital role in keeping industries and public services running, government rhetoric from both Conservative and Labour administrations has too often focused narrowly on irregular immigration. This, the motion argued, has fed the rise of Reform UK and the Far Right.

Cllr Tom Simon said:

“Camden has always been a place of welcome, compassion, and diversity. We cannot allow the poisonous language of division, whether from extremists on the streets or from the government front bench, to set the tone for how we treat our neighbours. Our borough stands firmly against hatred, and proudly for sanctuary.”
