Are Our Civil Liberties at Risk? Limits on Peaceful Protest?

  • 04 Aug 2025
  • 7.00 pm - 8.30 pm
  • Bardell House
    London
    SE1 2DH

Join the Southwark Liberal Democrat’s on the 4th of August at 19:00 for an evening of discussion with protest rights barrister Cllr Hamish McCallum. The event will be hosted at Wade Hall in Bermondsey.

What are the limits of peaceful protest in the UK today? Are our civil liberties being steadily eroded? When does protest cross the line into terrorism — and who decides? Should the state ever have the power to silence dissent?

These are some of the urgent and complex questions we’ll be exploring with Hamish McCallum, a barrister specialising in protest law. Hamish has worked on high-profile cases involving Bibby Stockholm, Extinction Rebellion, Just Stop Oil and Palestine Action. He has also worked on the Covid Inquiry.

This promises to be a fascinating discussion on one of the most pressing issues of our time. Whether you’re an activist or just curious, all are welcome to join the conversation.

🍷 Enjoy a glass of wine or a soft drink while we delve into the rights—and limits—of protest in modern Britain.

Your community needs you – could you stand for council?

We’re looking for passionate local people from all walks of life to stand as Liberal Democrat councillors in Southwark in May 2026.

Whether you're a community volunteer, a parent, a carer, a renter, a student, or someone who's simply had enough of being ignored by those in power—this is your opportunity to step up, speak out, and help build a better Southwark.

🧡 Be a champion for your neighbours

🧡 Stand up for the issues you care about

🧡 Help shape the future of your area

We want to hear from anyone that cares for Southwark but we especially want to hear from women, people of colour, LGBTQ+ residents, disabled people, and others whose voices are too often missing in politics. You don’t need to be a political expert—just someone who cares and wants to make a difference.

👋 Interested? Curious? Just want to find out more? Sign up to join a session to explore this.

  • 6.30 pm - 8.00 pm

We are holding a Confidential Campaign Briefing

exclusively for Liberal Democrat members and campaigners in the Hazel Grove Constituency.

This virtual session will be led jointly by the Hazel Grove

Campaigns Team and Senior Campaign Managers from the HQ Campaigns and Elections

team. Together, we will provide an overview of our campaign activity at the UK,

regional and constituency level — including insights into how we are performing

locally, what we’re learning from conversations on the doorstep, and how we

compare to the other parties in the area.

This is a great opportunity to gain a deeper understanding

of the wider campaign strategy, ask questions, and hear directly from those

leading the national and local effort.

Please note: this is a confidential briefing and open

only to Hazel Grove Liberal Democrat members and active campaigners.

The Zoom joining link will be circulated via email ahead of the meeting. We look forward to seeing you virtually.
