Backing Hospitality & Cutting Energy Bills - North Cornwall Liberal Democrats

I call on the Government to reverse its disastrous decision to remove Business Rates relief for hospitality this spring. Many of our local pubs, restaurants, cafes, hotels and entertainment venues are already struggling with spiralling costs; removing the current relief will mean their Business Rates will rocket by 40% or more.

Many of our local pubs, restaurants, cafes, hotels and entertainment venues here in North Cornwall are already struggling with escalating costs. The sad reality is that by removing their current business rate relief, more businesses will be forced to cease operating.

Our small and medium-sized businesses don’t just contribute to our national economy – they create local jobs, support vibrant town centres, and bring people together. They are the backbone of our rural communities.

We're hearing today (8th January 2026) that the Government may be rowing back on their plans. This is positive news, but more must be done to support our much-loved local businesses.
