Canterbury Liberal Democrats proudly announce the appointment of Councillor Mike Sole as the new Leader of the party on Canterbury City Council, alongside Councillor Alex Ricketts as Deputy Leader. This dynamic duo brings a wealth of experience, dedication, and determination to give Canterbury residents a fair deal.

Cllr Mike Sole has built an unrivalled reputation as a champion for residents in Nailbourne ward and the Kent County Council Canterbury South division he represents.

As Cabinet Member for Finance since the 2023 election, Mike has successfully piloted the new council budget, filling a financial hole of £1.9m left by the previous administration. Mike brings a vision of progress and inclusivity to his new role as Leader, with a focus on sound financial management to benefit all residents.

Cllr Sole said:

“I am honoured and excited to lead our fantastic group of Councillors on Canterbury City Council, building on the excellent work of Michael Dixey, who has led the group with selfless dedication for the last nine years. His guidance will continue to be hugely important, and I’m delighted he will be continuing in his cabinet role.”

 Mike went on to say:

“I am acutely aware of the problems affecting residents in Canterbury, Herne Bay, Whitstable and the surrounding villages. We have a real opportunity as part of the coalition to bring our vision of a fair deal for local residents and have already been able to deliver much of what we promised in our manifesto. We have reopened the Sturry Park & Ride, restored Canterbury’s market, extended the free parking period for blue badge holders to three hours, put in £500,000 into projects to help our environment and added more Council houses.

Joining him is Cllr Alex Ricketts, who was elected alongside Mike in 2019. He said:

“I’m delighted that Mike will be our new leader, and I would also like to thank Michael for his leadership and sage advice over the last few years. I hope to be able to emulate his sterling example.

There is much more to do in repairing the damage done by Conservative administrations in Canterbury, Maidstone and Westminster, and we will ensure Liberal Democrat values of fairness, equality, and environmentalism are at the heart of everything we do.”
