Labour block extra help for Londoners hit by the Building Safety Crisis

• Majority of London Assembly support proposals put forward by the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Members for extra help to be given to leaseholders affected by the Building Safety Crisis
• Opposition by Labour Assembly Members blocks the amendment being included in the Mayor’s Final Budget for 2022-23

London Liberal Democrat Members proposed the creation of a support hub that would offer a range of mental health support and practical advice for the thousands of Londoners impacted by the crisis.     The costed amendment was prepared and refined following the Mayor’s public response to a previously passed amendment at the London Assembly Plenary meeting on the 26 January. The amendment garnered cross-party support from the Conservatives and Greens, but was blocked by Labour.

Speaking after the amendment received support from a majority of London Assembly Members Hina Bokhari AM, who proposed the amendment said\:          

“It is simply wrong that leaseholders and residents across London are living in fear over their building’s safety, whilst many leaseholders are also facing crippling bills. 

“What we have proposed today is practical action to help these Londoners caught up in the Building Safety Crisis.   In a city where cladding and fire safety issues are so extensive there are no excuses for the Mayor not stepping up.”   

“It is a great shame that the Mayor has not listened and refused to take up our proposals.   Those Assembly Members who blocked this amendment being finally included in the Mayor’s budget must also account for their actions.”
