Racial Diversity Campaign

The Racial Diversity Campaign (RDC) is the vehicle in the party that finds, trains and supports BAME candidates through to their candidate approval, selection and election.

Its principal aim is to increase the number of ethnic minorities standing to become MPs, MSPs, MEPs, Assembly Members, elected Mayors and Police and Crime Commissioners. It also works alongside The Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors (ALDC) to increase the number of ethnic minority Councillors and Council Leaders.

There are three key pillars to the RDC's mission:

  1. Support BAME members to become approved candidates: Increase the proportion of BAME candidates on the approved list from 8% (at GE2019) to 13% by the end of this RDC executive’s term in February 2023, in line with the 2011 Census (this target may be revised to reflect the 2021 Census).

  2. Support BAME approved candidates to be selected as candidates: Increase the proportion of BAME candidates selected as prospective parliamentary candidates (PPCs) from 9% (at GE2019) to 13% by the next General Election, in line with the 2011 Census.

  3. Support BAME PPCs to win elections: Increase the proportion of BAME Liberal Democrat MPs from 18% (GE2019) to 25% at the next General Election.
