Storm Goretti: COBRA should be convened immediately to handle emergency response

9 Jan 2026

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to the impact of Storm Goretti, which carried a red storm warning in the South West of England and left more than 44,000 properties without power and transport links in chaos, Liberal Democrat Gideon Amos, MP for Taunton and Wellington commented:

“Storm Goretti has caused widespread damage in communities across the South West overnight, with power outages and serious flooding still causing serious concerns and impacting travel.

“It is essential to restore power quickly, keep people safe and ensure vulnerable residents are properly supported.

“The Government’s COBRA committee must urgently be convened to ensure fast help is delivered across the region. The South West is routinely overlooked by the Government, but we cannot be ignored in this time of need.”
