EMBARGO: IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Social media ban: cobbled together restrictions won't keep children safe

Responding to reports from The Times that the Government's social media ban will 'go further than Australia's', Liberal Democrat Education, Children and Families Spokesperson Munira Wilson MP said:

“The Liberal Democrats have long stood with the thousands of families crying out for action against harmful content and addictive algorithms, and we will keep fighting their corner.

“While we still need to hear the full details, after months of delay, the Government appears to have cobbled together a hodgepodge of social media restrictions which don't keep children safe, nor hold big tech's feet to the fire.

“The Government must heed the lessons from Australia and stand up to big tech with a credible set of measures that genuinely protects our children, rather than rushing through a half-baked policy just to secure a political legacy.”
