Market turmoil on Trump tariffs: Chancellor urged to hold summit with pension funds
EMBARGO: Immediate Release
The Liberal Democrats have called on Rachel Reeves to hold an urgent summit with pension funds, banks and financial watchdogs to discuss the market turmoil since Trump’s tariffs and provide reassurance to British pensioners.
Financial markets are plunging further today after China announced retaliatory tariffs in an escalating trade war.
Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP said:
“Trump’s destructive trade war has wiped billions off global stock markets and millions of people are now worried about what this will mean for their pensions.
“The Chancellor needs to hold an urgent summit with pension funds to discuss what can be done to protect British pensions that are exposed to these trade shocks.
“The chaos that Trump has unleashed poses a major threat to our economy and people’s living standards.
“The government needs to step up and take action to cushion us from this threat: instead of simply sitting back and hoping for the best, the Government needs to get on the front foot and give British businesses a boost by urgently starting talks to get a better trade deal with the rest of Europe.”
