EMBARGO: IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lib Dems call for Thames Water special administration regime and mutualisation pathway
Responding to the Government’s rejection of the Thames Water rescue deal, Liberal Democrat MP for Witney, Charlie Maynard, said:
“Last year, Thames Water recklessly pumped sewage into our rivers and lakes for 107,822 hours. For too long the largest water company in the UK has been left unchecked while their customers pick up the bill.
“It's time to blow the final whistle on Thames Water and get a capable regulator in place before more damage is done.
“For over a year, the Liberal Democrats have called for Thames Water to be put into a Special Administration Regime. Now the Government must go further: bring it into a mutual ownership model to give customers a real stake.”
Liberal Democrat Environment spokesperson, Tim Farron MP, added:
“We utterly condemn this Government's failure to fix our broken water system or protect our rivers from polluters. Labour must act now and prove they're serious about cleaning up our waterways.
“The Thames Water disasterclass is an unmissable moment for the Government to show another way is possible - mutualisation via the SAR route.”
